In my copy of Microsoft Word 2000, Format has disappeared from the menu bar (it used to come after File, Edit, View, Insert). I noticed this some days after installing PC-cillin Antivirus 2000 and Adobe Acrobat. I've tried uninstalling both programs, and uninstalling and reinstalling Word, but Format hasn't reappeared.

This isn't a known problem, however it may be caused by some data in either the Registry or the template normal.dot that Word is picking up when it starts. It might be possible to clear the problem by deleting the Registry folder in which the menu and toolbar settings are stored. As always, be sure to back up the Registry (see tip Back up the Registry) and know how to restore the Registry (see tip Restore the Registry from the backup).
Close Word 2000, then launch the Registry Editor (click Start, Run, type Regedit and hit Enter.) Open the following Registry folders in turn: Hkey_Current_User, Software, Microsoft, Office, 9.0, Word. In the lefthand pane select the subfolder named Data. Right-click this folder and select Delete from the context menu. Word will create a new Data folder the next time you start it.
